Blocks were paper pieced using silks and cottons then the entire center and all four corners were pieced together, piped and appliqued to the background fabric. I then quilted 10,000 yards of metallic thread in a style I call overlay quilting. That is, the stitching provides another separate dimension to the quilt so that the quilting stands on its own |

"Crown Jewel"
Claudia Clark Myers
Duluth, MN |
“Crown Jewel” It started with an antique Japanese Obi. Marilyn purchased it at a quilt show and challenged me to do something with it. First, I cut it all apart and encircled the center pieced section with it. Then, I copied, embroidered and appliqued the flower motifs from the obi onto the quilt and designed an elongated paper-pieced block that looked sort of like a jewel, using it for the center section and the border. Marilyn elaborated on many of the obi motifs for her elegant quilting designs. She used 10,000 yards of thread to bring them to life.
