Star Berries
Gail Stepanek
New Lenox, IL |
A Scottish children’s story tells of a red berry plant that only grows by starlight. Hand pieced seven point stars (septagrams are known as magical stars) are combined with hand appliquéd vines and berries to illustrate the story. Ronda’s exquisite quilting adds a layer of textured beauty.

Wendy Caton Reed

I love the “cheddar” colored fabrics of the 19th century and I love appliqueing small pieces so I combined the two and came up with this. I had originally named it “American Cheddar” but after a frustrating night of ripping out grapes my husband re-named it “The Grapes of Bath”. There are 1000 grapes and over 1000 yards of thread!

I’m most content when hand quilting. Using applique on the outer aspect allowed a large central work area for quilting. The center represents a Victorian Ceiling Medallion with repetition of the outer floral design. Trapunto added dimension. Using tan thread around the trapunto added depth. Beads add a bit of sparkle. |

So, to honor her years of teaching, I named the quilt after her. All of the feathers in this quilt are my original designs made specifically to fit the open areas of this quilt. |

The Geisha and the Serving Girl
Claudia Clark Myers & Marilyn Badger
Duluth, MN |
Using my large, free-form drawing of the Traditional Sawtooth block, I combined dupioni silks, commercial cottons and hand-overdyes to make this quilt. Marilyn designed an interesting scroll background filler for the body of the quilt and echoed the “fattened” Sawtooth blocks for the border quilting. When it was finished, I added Lumiere fabric paint to some of the triangular blocks in the background quilting to move the color out to the border.

I created the drawing for this quilt, building the scene around a Dover picture of two figures. Marilyn quilted the intricate design, including all the little details, like their toenails, and then, I painted it, using a combination of Seta Shimmers, Lumiere and Stewart Gill fabric paints. So, it actually is a wholecloth quilt that has been painted--with a border.
