*A Professional is defined as one who teaches quiltmaking, judges quilts, has published quilting books or patterns, sells, designs or quilts as a profession, or has won placement or monetary awards in two or more competitions in nationally recognized venues, or in shows where the total award disbursement is $10,000 or higher. If any person who participated in the entry is classified as a professional by this definition, the entry must be entered in the professional category. IHQS reserved the right to make final determinations of “Professional.”

Critical Dates

  • February 1, 2009 ENTRY DEADLINE. Entries CANNOT be postmarked later than this date.
  • February 15, 2009 Shipping information packets received by entrants. If you have not received your packet by this date, e-mail entries@ihqs.org or phone 812-391-0009.
  • February 27, 2009 All shipped entries must arrive at IHQS.
  • March 2, 2009 All hand-delivered entries must be at IHQS.
  • March 7, 2009 Walk-in pickup of items at show site. Entries available 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. only. NO EARLY RELEASE OF QUILTS.
  • March 9, 2009 All shipped entries delivered to FedEx Center.

Entry Rules

All rules apply to both Amateur and *Professional Entries.

  1. All persons involved in making the entry must be listed on the entry form. If not an original design, design credit must be given to the source.
  2. YOU determine the category and skill level in which your item will be entered.
    a. Appliqué: Appliqué predominates over other techniques in amount or affect.
    b. Pieced: Piecing predominates over other techniques in amount or effect.
    c. Fabric Art: Original designs (not a copy or adaptation of a previous work) created as works of visual art, reflecting innovative construction and design techniques, themes, subject matter and/or materials. Quilts must be made of fabric, have three layers and contain quilting.
    d. Wall Quilts: Includes any technique or combination of techniques that fall within size definitions.
    e. Mixed Techniques: A quilt where two or more reasonably balanced major construction techniques are used to develop design of the top.
    f. Special Techniques: Special techniques may include those such as cross-stitch, embroidery, wholecloth, three-dimensional, etc. Quilts must be made of fabric, have three layers and contain quilting.
    g. Small Scale Quilts: Quilts must be proportionately accurate renderings of larger quilts, and may include portraits, landscapes, wholecloth, and miniatures.
  3. Each completed entry form must be accompanied by a non-refundable $10 entry fee. You may request that your quilt be displayed only and not judged. The $10 entry fee still applies.
  4. If you have an e-mail address we will send the shipping instructions by e-mail.
  5. If you want the shipping information mailed to you, you must include a Self-Addressed, Stamped, Business Size (#10) Envelope (SASE).
  6. Entry Form and the non-refundable entry fee must be postmarked by February 1, 2009. Incomplete entries will not be accepted. Entries are accepted in order of postmark date. IHQS is not a juried show, but reserves the right to limit entries based on space constraints.
  7. No more than two (2) entries per category will be accepted for this show from the same person.
  8. Entry must not have been displayed in a previous Indiana Heritage Quilt Show.
  9. Entry may be completed by hand, machine or both. Entries must be made of three (3) layers of fabric and hand or machine quilted. No tied quilts will be displayed or judged.
  10. Entries must have been completed after January 1, 2005 and be in excellent condition.
  11. Incomplete, damaged or soiled quilts may not qualify for display or judging.
  12. Entry must be permanently identified on the back.
  13. Entry must have a 4-inch sleeve attached to the top of the quilt, and all edges of the sleeve must be secured to the quilt back. Small scale quilts must have a minimum 2” sleeve attached to the top of the quilt.
  14. If the entry has no hanging sleeve, it will not be displayed, and will be returned to the entrant.
  15. Quilt must be a single unit, NOT framed with wood, metal, etc.
  16. The Indiana Heritage Quilt Show reserves the right to reject any unqualified or misrepresented entry. All decisions of the IHQS board of directors, and IHQS judges are final.
  17. Shipped items must arrive at IHQS between Monday, February 23 and Friday, February 27, 2009.
  18. Each entry must be in a separate box.
  19. Detailed shipping instructions will be mailed or e-mailed after the Entry Form is received by IHQS. Please do not send your entry until you receive the shipping information packet. If you have not received your packet by February 15, 2009 please e-mail entries@ihqs.org or phone 812-391-0009.
  20. A certified appraisal for insurance purposes is needed if value of materials is more than $500.

Non-Refundable Entry Fee is $10.00 per entry. Each entry must be accompanied by an Entry Form, Entry Fee, Self-Addressed, Stamped Business-Size Envelope if shipping instructions are to be mailed. Shipping instructions will be e-mailed whenever possible. Entry Form and non-refundable Entry Fee must be postmarked by February 1, 2009. If you have questions regarding contest rules,
